7 Common Symptoms of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is kind of a sleep disorder that is considered to be quite serious as when one suffers from such a disorder their breathing stops and starts repeatedly during their sleep. These pauses can happen for more than 100 times every hour.

The main cause of sleep apnea is the airway becoming too narrow to permit normal breathing or tongue blocking the airway for the safe passage of air.

Doctors believe that there are many people who have sleep apnea but are unaware of the same as the ailment has not been diagnosed.

The long-term sleep apnea can be linked with hypertension, irregular heartbeat and heart attack and even stroke.

  • You Snore Loudly – Your bedpartner is usually the first person to know when you snore loudly. Snoring happens to be a mild form of airway obstruction. The loud and chronic snoring is naturally one of the most glaring symptoms of sleep apnea. But many people who snore are not aware of it unless alerted by an annoyed bedpartner. But snoring is not a conclusive symptom. Many snorers don’t have sleep apnea and many sleep apnea patients do not snore. Nevertheless, in case your snoring is disruptive and loud you should discuss with your doctor as that can be signifying sleep apnea.
  • You Feel Exhausted All Day – Daytime drowsiness happens to be one of the most significant yet the most ignored symptoms of sleep apnea. The shortage of sleep is a very common phenomenon in society and that is why feeling drowsy during the day is taken very casually. But if you are spending about 7-9 hours in bed and still feeling sleepy during the day then there are high chances that you are suffering from sleep apnea.
  • You Have Pounding Morning Headaches – Your body lacks oxygen when you don’t breathe normally at night. When your body lacks oxygen your brain does not like it and so most often you wake up with a pretty decent headache. This is not a long-lasting chronic headache, but it is likely to go away within an hour or two of waking up as the brain derives the oxygen that it needs after a struggling night.
  • You Have Dry Mouth in the Morning – When you snore with an open mouth, it is not just your partner in bed who can bring it to notice. How the mouth feels when you wake up will also give you clue about the same. When there is a lot of air in the mouth the saliva productions is naturally restricted. This way you end up with a dry mouth and throat as you wake up.
  • You Have High Blood Pressure – The sleep apnea is linked to hypertension. If sleep apnea is untreated the adrenaline rush at night is elevated which in turn increases the blood pressure and eventually the heart rate. The repeated spikes in blood pressure due to adrenaline rush at night results in blood pressure enhancement during the day. The high blood pressure also enhances the risk of a heart ailment.
  • You Are Obese or Overweight – A person’s body weight is directly linked to having sleep apnea. People who are obese are more prone to have sleep apnea than those who have the healthy weight. The excessive fatty tissues that accumulate in the throat and neck can be caused by sleep apnea. In fact, research reveals that if the neck circumference is greater than 16 inches in case of females or 17 inches in case of males, they have a higher risk of sleep apnea as this implies the build-up of fatty acids around the airways that pose constraints in breathing during the sleep.
  • You Experience Depression and Mood Swings – Any person’s mood can be affected by a lack of sleep. If you lose your sleep every night you are bound to end up irritable, short-tempered, anxiety-prone and even depressed over time. If you think that a lack of sleep is actually resulting in depression, then you should contact the primary care physician to know whether it is related to asleep disorder.
